B.S. Manjunath

Biography

Manjunath directs the Center for Multimodal Big Data Science and Healthcare. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles in various journals and peer reviewed conferences and his publications have been cited extensively. He is an inventor on 24 Patents and co-edited the first book on the ISO/MPEG-7 multimedia content representation standard. He directed the NSF/ITR supported center on Bio-Image Informatics. His team is developing the open-source BisQue image informatics platform that helps users manage, annotate, analyze and share their multimodal images in a scalable manner with a focus on reproducible science.

Research

Manjunath's research areas include image/video analysis (including texture and shape analysis, segmentation, registration); multimedia databases and data mining (feature extraction, content based access, high dimensional indexing and similarity search); steganography (data hiding in images and video, and their detection); and signal/image processing for bio-informatics.

Mentoring Priorities

"Mentoring is multidimensional: opportunistic, tailoring to the individual strengths, immersing them in a group setting where learning can be enhanced based on peer-to-peer interactions, collaboratively working while also developing skills for independent research, encouraging tackling real world (hard) problems that benefit science in general (crossing the disciplinary boundaries), and always asking hard questions (answer Heilmeier's Catechism questions in proposals and papers, and be prepare with those before technical meetings)."
